Anna Fernstädt was born on 23 November 1996 in Prague. Her family moved to Germany when she was one year old. She started competing in skeleton aged fourteen and has competed at the top international level since 2013.

In 2015, she competed in her first Junior World Championship in Altenberg; the following year in Winterberg she won the bronze medal. Since 2016, she has competed in the World Cup, placing third on two occasions. In 2017 she competed in the Senior World Championships for the first time, earning a bronze medal as part of the German team in the mixed team competition, and finishing fourth in the individual race. She placed 6th at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

In autumn 2018, Anna left the German national team to join the Czech national team. Because of the switch, she could not compete in the World Cup during the 2018–19 season; she competed in the Intercontinental Cup instead, which she won. In March 2019, she finished 4th at the World Championship in Whistler.

Since the autumn of 2019 she has once again competed in World Cup races; she placed 7th at the 2020 World Championship in Altenberg, and finished 9th in the overall standings of the 2019–20 season.

She is the first skeleton racer who has won three consecutive Junior World Championships (2018, 2019, 2020). Her current goal is to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
